If you love fries and soft serve, you’re in luck, because they’re now officially in season.

Québec City is a snack shack mecca. Ask around and you’ll see that people have their favourites and are eager to debate their respective merits, praising the homefries of one or the tasty poutines of another. For the record, here’s our selection of the best snack shacks in and around Québec City:

  • 1 L’Usine à frites

No trip to Wendake is complete without a stop at L’Usine à frites, a classic snack shack with a carnival air. A quick scan of the comments on their Facebook page should be enough to convince you that their fries are delicious, their servings are plentiful, and the owner, Françoise, is a gem!

  • 2 Flashbourg

The Thivierge Family has been serving its loyal customers a delicious snack shack menu from March to November since 1996. The food is homemade, including their tasty meatloaf, while the potatoes come from Bellechasse, just over on the other side of the river, and are peeled onsite each morning.

  • 3 Casse-croûte chez Mag

Duo Steve St-Pierre and Louise Paradis are all smiles as they welcome you to their charming snack shack in Sainte-Famille on Île d’Orléans. Steve, who has 35 years’ experience as a chef, has revamped the traditional menu with local fare such as Île d’Orléans potatoes, wild mushrooms, and lobster. Yum!

  • 4 Le Truck de l’Île

Still on Île d’Orléans, Bistrot de l’Île has a food truck that’s alternately stationed in the bistro parking lot or on the dock of the Saint-Laurent marina. Their simple, tasty menu is heightened by the incredible view of the St. Lawrence River. Why eat a hamburger anywhere else?

  • 5 Le Shack à patates

In additional to the traditional snack shack menu, Shack à Patates offers a few healthy options like the Santa Fé bowl and the delicious Veggie Burger. It’s steps away from Mont-Sainte-Anne.

  • 6 Chez Micheline

This snack shack owes its stellar reputation to the friendly staff, tasty food, generous portions, and famous poutine. Or maybe it’s the fact that they have chow mein on the menu. In all likelihood, it’s the combination of all those fine qualities that have made Chez Micheline a must for anyone passing through Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures.

  • 7 Ti-Oui Snack Bar

Ti-Oui has been the local hangout in Saint-Raymond for over 45 years and is famous for its chicken. Vegetarians will be pleased to know that the snack shack now serves a veggie burger made with soy protein.

  • 8 Casse-croûte du Vieux-Moulin

People in the Pont-Rouge area know that when they’re really hungry, nothing satisfies like the giant plates at Casse-Croûte du Vieux-Moulin, which has nine different kinds of poutine on the menu. For dessert, the ice cream stand has all the frozen treats you could want.

  • 9 Roquette

Roquette, a vintage snack bar, is a creation of the restaurant Rioux and Pettigrew. Completely different from the restaurant owner's usual style, the snack bar is funny with its coloured facade, but its menu remains sought after. Tempura-style fiddleheads or even breaded turkey drumsticks with cornflakes are some of the inventive and appetizing items on the menu. Icy treats with bold flavours such as cucumber and elderberry or miso caramel are also served at the window. In addition, the place is located close to the bike path in the Old Port, which makes it an ideal stop for your next bike ride.

  • 10 Food Trucks

In closing, we should mention a few food trucks for fans of street food.  Côtes-à-Côtes traiteur and Brise-glace / bar laitier mobile pop up all around Québec City with tasty meals to go. Follow them on social media to see where they’re currently stationed. Every day until October 31, 2021, food trucks will provide you with their food offer at the Quai des Cageux on the Promenade Samuel-De Champlain.
