When the air becomes crisp and snow begins to fall, Old Québec transitions into a stunning winter wonderland. Snow-capped 17th and 18th-century buildings, festive lights strung along doorways and roofs, and in the heart of Old Québec, a charming Québec City German Christmas Market which runs from November 19 to December 23, 2026 (Thursday to Sunday). Frohe Weihnachten!

Here Are 10 Reasons to Plan a Visit:

  • 1

Get Immersed in a Magical Christmas Tale Setting

Strolling through the rows of vendors, we feel transported to another world. The market’s wooden stalls and hundreds of Christmas lights transform Old Québec into a real-life Christmas village. With over 125 exhibitors each year, visitors can spend hours wandering around, meeting local artisans, sampling delicious treats, and enjoying a host of other surprises. Visit at night for an even more complete immersion in this magical scene.

  • 2

Experience the Charm of a European Christmas This Side of the Atlantic

This unique experience evokes the charm and magic of a European market, but on our side of the Atlantic. And it’s not just the market itself—the historic buildings, narrow streets, and large, brightly lit squares of Old Québec really make it feel like being in a European city during the holiday season. We love strolling from stall to stall and soaking up the warm atmosphere that makes the market such an unfamiliar yet friendly experience.

  • 3

    Learn About German Christmas Traditions

Inspired by the famous winter markets of Germany, the market offers a chance to experience some quintessential German Christmas traditions. Warm up at the WinterBar with a traditional mulled wine, then browse the imported goods and specialties that have made European markets famous. The flavours, decorations, and traditions come together to create a cultural journey right here in the heart of Old Québec.

  • 4

    Sample Gourmet Specialties

It’s hard to walk through the market without being tempted by the delicious aromas wafting from the stalls! Freshly baked pretzels, grilled sausages, gingerbread, crepes, pastries, and mulled wine make for a delightful culinary journey. We like to try local specialties as we shop, hot drink in hand. Take the time to savour every bite and enjoy every new discovery. The food is an integral part of the experience.

  • 5

    Find Unique, Unexpected Gifts

The market is a great place to find special gifts for loved ones. With all the handmade goods, gourmet treats, and European imports, there’s no shortage of ideas for gifts they’ll cherish. We love browsing the stalls in search of the perfect finds for everyone on our list. The nutcrackers, a holiday classic, are particularly eye-catching with bright colours and intricate details.

  • 6

    Meet Passionate Artisans

Behind the market’s many stalls are artisans and creators, each with their own story to tell. We enjoy taking a few minutes to chat with them, learn about their backgrounds, and find out more about how their products are made. These interactions give us a deeper appreciation of the work that goes into every creation and make the day a more social experience.

  • 7

Enjoy Activities and Entertainment for the Whole Family

The market experience isn’t just about shopping! There are plenty of activities to keep the fun going and get the whole family involved. Performances, workshops, and other activities elevate the market and give children just as many reasons to love it as adults. Of course, one of the most popular activities is meeting the REAL Santa Claus. It’s a surefire way to make lasting holiday memories.

  • 8

Listen to Traditional Music and Christmas Carols

All through the market, shoppers are serenaded by choral arrangements, traditional songs, and various other performances. We like to pause and take in a performance, hum along to a familiar tune, or simply soak in the festive atmosphere. There’s nothing like music to put us in the holiday spirit.

  • 9

    Bring Back Christmas Memories

One of the most comforting things about the Québec City German Market is how the scents, lights, carols, and decorations can so quickly bring back memories. They might remind us of Christmases from our childhoods or ones we’ve only seen in movies. We love leaning into that nostalgia and spending a few hours reconnecting with our inner child.

Make it a Magical Day in Old Québec

The market is the perfect starting point for a day out in Old Québec. Keep walking past the last stalls toward Petit-Champlain to admire the seasonal decorations, including the famous giant Christmas tree, then take some time to explore the beautifully lit streets. Skating on the ice rink at Place D’Youville makes for the perfect post-market winter activity. The neighbourhood lights and decorated storefronts never fail to make us want to stay out just a little longer.
