We know a sure way to bring out anyone’s inner child. Every winter, the giant slides in front of Château Frontenac provide an opportunity for whimsy and amazement. Fun fact: it’s the oldest tourist attraction in the city! The slides first appeared in 1884 and have been an integral part of Québec City winters for over 140 years.

But they’re just the beginning. From snow tubing to traditional tobogganing, there are many places in the area to enjoy the thrill of racing down a snowy slope.

When temperatures drop, winter sports enthusiasts from all over flock to Place D’Youville, in the heart of Old Québec. Surrounded by historic buildings and magical lighting, locals and visitors alike lace up their skates to enjoy the ice against the backdrop of the fortifications.

Those who prefer a more natural landscape can swap the fortifications for a frozen trail through the forest. The Québec City area is full of places to enjoy ice skating in a unique setting.

Winter casts the St. Lawrence River in a whole new light. Ice builds up and drifts along with the current, creating a particularly spectacular landscape. Experience it up close on the ferry between Québec City and Lévis, which also offers one of the most beautiful views of the city, including Château Frontenac in the background.

One of the best things about winter in Québec City is being able to enjoy nature without having to travel far out of town. Jacques-Cartier National Park and the Sentiers des Caps wilderness trails are perfect places to explore snow-covered landscapes on foot. Projections, light shows, and audiovisual installations accompany visitors on a walk through an otherworldly setting. Onhwa’ Lumina is the only experience of its kind in Québec and is open year-round, but we recommend visiting in winter, as the snow makes it all the more unforgettable.

In winter, there’s nothing like coming back inside to warm up after a few hours outdoors.
