Le bouleversant Stabat Mater de Dvořák

A 100% Canadian cast, featuring four outstanding soloists and the Orchestra’s Chorus, takes the stage for this eagerly anticipated performance of Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, brought to life under the direction of Nyco Desmeules. From its premiere in Prague in 1880, this essential treasure of Romantic sacred music revealed the composer’s genius to the international stage. Dvořák completed his musical setting of the text—expressing the Virgin Mary’s sorrow at the foot of the Cross—after the successive loss of three of his children, pouring into the score the deepest emotions of his soul.

Rooted in the tradition of the great Stabat Mater settings by Palestrina, Pergolesi, and Rossini, Dvořák’s work bears the distinctive signature of Czech Romanticism. Its emotional and spiritual intensity highlights the composer’s mastery of both orchestra and voice, serving one of the cornerstone works of the choral repertoire.
