Fall in Québec City is so much more than just colourful landscapes. It’s full of traditions, time spent in nature, and all the small pleasures that come when the leaves start to change. It’s also the perfect time of year for hiking in the forest and enjoying local produce.

Here’s a selection of our favourite ways to make the most of the season and experience a Québec City fall like a local.

Take In the Spectacular Fall Colours

Fall foliage is beautiful but fleeting, so people around here know they have to start enjoying it as soon as it arrives. Every sunny day is a chance to take a road trip, go for a hike, or simply pause and admire the scenery. The vibrant hues start appearing in mid-September, particularly in Jacques-Cartier National Park and around Mont-Sainte-Anne, where visitors can take in breathtaking views. The changing leaves can also be glimpsed in city parks, and the fun lasts into October.

For the ultimate dawn-to-dusk experience, we love to book unique accommodations surrounded by nature. This lets us absorb the scenery at our own pace and witness some of the most magical moments of the day: sunrise and sunset.

Get In the Halloween Spirit in Old Québec

Halloween brings about a transformation in Old Québec. Seasonal decorations pop up everywhere, like the Plains of Abraham, Petit-Champlain, and all along Rue Saint-Jean. We especially love strolling by the decorated storefronts and enjoying the uniquely spooky atmosphere of the city’s historic neighbourhoods. City Hall and the surrounding area are definitely worth a look.

As the day draws to a close, the air turns cool, the lights come on, and the neighbourhood ramps up the Halloween spirit even more. The chilly air provides an excellent excuse to end the walk with a good cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

Go on a Top-Tier Hike Just Outside the City

Lower temperatures and fiery fall foliage create the perfect conditions for an outdoor adventure. Luckily, there are several hiking spots just a few minutes from the city centre that offer exceptional views of the local landscape. They’re especially enjoyable this time of year, when the mosquitoes have calmed down and the soft autumnal sunlight beautifully flatters the terrain.

We love a good hike, but fall is also a great time for biking, canoeing, kayaking, and wildlife spotting.

    Explore Île d’Orléans

Île d’Orléans is beautiful all year round, but it has a unique charm in the fall. The trees that line the streets glow with red leaves, and the market stands overflow with local products. The island is best explored with no set schedule and plenty of spur-of-the-moment stops along the way.

Apple-picking is a popular fall activity, especially for families. It’s also a great opportunity to explore the bakeries, gourmet shops, and local farms that give the island its character.

Sample Local Flavours at Public Markets

Fall is the best time of year to eat local. Take a leisurely stroll through the stalls of the city’s public markets and plan the evening’s dinner menu based on the fruits, vegetables, and other local products that are in season. Le Grand Marché de Québec is a standard, of course, but the smaller public markets are also worth a visit.

We love to follow a beautiful day at the market with an evening at a microbrewery, enjoying drinks inspired by the fall harvest.

Visit a Vineyard Amid the Fall Colours

Fall is one of the best times to visit the vineyards in the Québec City area, as they have a more peaceful atmosphere this time of year. Learn more about the craft of winemaking while taking in the exceptional countryside views.

Of course, many vineyards also offer tastings of local wines. What better way to slow down and fully savour the bountiful notes of fall?

    Witness the Snow Goose Migration

Every fall, a breathtaking natural phenomenon takes place just a few kilometres outside Québec City. Tens of thousands of snow geese stop during their migration to alight on the mudflats of the St. Lawrence River at the Cap-Tourmente National Wildlife Area. The event attracts birdwatchers, outdoor enthusiasts, and photographers from near and far.

We love hiking the trails in the wildlife area while keeping an eye out for the geese as they cross the sky. The sheer scale of the flocks and their distinctive calls create an impressive and unforgettable spectacle.

Relax at a Nature-Drenched Nordic Spa

After a day spent exploring the many attractions in the Québec City area, there’s no better way to wrap up a fall getaway than with a visit to a Nordic spa. The fall colours provide a special backdrop to the experience.

Our favourites are the hot springs, rest areas, and magnificent views of the surrounding natural environment. It feels as if time stands still. We guarantee it’s one of the best ways to recharge and fully drink in this beautiful season.

So, how many of these fall bucket-list experiences have you tried?
