The Pope's Visit to Québec City

Pope Francis will be visiting Canada July 24-29, 2022 and will be in Québec City July 27-29.

The Pope’s pastoral visit will provide a unique opportunity for him to interact with Indigenous Peoples, to address the impact of the participation of the Catholic Church in the operation of residential schools throughout Canada, all with the aim of pursuing the path to reconciliation.

Schedule of the Gatherings to See the Pope

July 27 from 1:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

  • The Pope's convoy
    It will be possible to see the Pope in person when he will circulate between the airport and the Citadelle. Pope Francis will also pass on the Plains of Abraham after his ceremonial speeches.
  • Giant screens on the Plains of Abraham  
    Giant screens will broadcast the events in which the Pope will participate. The general public will be able to gather at two locations on the Plains of Abraham: a main site behind the Québec City Armory and a secondary site in front of Musée national des beaux-arts (MNBAQ).
    No ticket required, however those planning on watching from the Plains of Abraham are invited to register ahead.

July 28, 10 a.m.

  • Mass at the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Shrine
    Only ticket holders will be able to go to the Sanctuary in the official shuttles. Tickets are mandatory for general admission (out of stock). Please note that the road 138 will be closed and there will be no car parking spaces available

  • Giant screens on the Plains of Abraham

Accommodation

Book your accommodation for the Pope's official visit to Québec City as soon as possible.

Closed Roads

The influx of visitors as well as certain temporary traffic obstructions could make travel more difficult in certain sectors from July 27 to 29. All information is available on the website of the City of Québec.

  • On Wednesday, July 27, traffic will be temporarily interrupted on the route of the convoy between Jean-Lesage International Airport and the Citadelle for approximately two hours. People who need to go to the airport to catch a flight will have to plan their trips to arrive before the traffic interruption, no later than 2 p.m. See more details on the airport website.
  • The Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré sector should be avoided on July 27 and the R-138 will be closed on July 28: follow the traffic changes on the Québec 511 site of the Ministère des Transports du Québec. 
  • Tourist bus traffic will be prohibited in the Old Québec / Upper Town sector from July 27 to 29. A temporary boarding and disembarking point will be set up on rue Jacques-Parizeau, between rue Claire-Fontaine and rue de l’Amérique-Française, opposite to the parc de l’Amérique-Française.

Shuttles, Public Transit and Parkings

The use of public transit is recommended for getting around on July 27 and 28. Buses from the Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) will run according to regular routes and schedules. The RTC will also provide a shuttle service to get to the Plains of Abraham from park-and-ride lots. 

Public Toilets

Several public toilets are accessible in downtown Québec City.
