Some attractions in the Québec City area have sound and light shows or immersive installations that transport us to new and captivating worlds. These multimedia experiences turn digital art into a source of wonder and amazement. For local immersive experiences that deliver all the feels, read on.

Onhwa’ Lumina

Just outside Québec City, Wendake has an immersive installation that comes alive as night falls: Onhwa' Lumina. The 1.2 km (0.87 mile) night walk combines lighting, music, visual effects, and projections to create a fantastical nocturnal world. The walk lasts about 50 minutes and features 7 different stations with sound and light shows and projections that will leave visitors in awe.

All along the lantern-lit path, there are projections, luminous animals, and even a long house. It’s a wonderful way to discover the myths, symbols, and traditions of the Huron-Wendat Nation.

Onhwa’ Lumina is a magical experience that changes with the seasons. In the winter, the sparkling snow forms a perfect screen for the projections and makes for a very special experience. The hours vary with the time of year, depending on when the light falls. Round out the experience with a trip to the Huron-Wendat Museum and a meal at one of Wendake’s Indigenous restaurants.

Open year-round, except in November and April

Immersion Québec

Hidden away in Québec’s city centre, an interactive adventure awaits at Immersion Québec. It’s the perfect place to explore the city’s rich heritage and relieve key moments in its history through the magical realism of virtual reality. A VR headset is all it takes to travel through time on this 40-minute immersive journey.

Witness the arrival of Samuel de Champlain and get a front-row seat to the battle of the Plains of Abraham. The VR experience is followed by an interactive skill-testing component and more fun facts about the history of Québec City. Immersion Québec is located in the Old Town, so make a day of it by exploring the historic Petit-Champlain District.

Open year-round

L'Oiseau mécanique (The Mechanical Bird)

At Massif de Charlevoix, about an hour from Québec City, there’s another nighttime immersive experience: L’Oiseau mécanique, or The Mechanical Bird. It’s the world’s first mountainside sound and light show designed for nighttime viewing from a giant merry-go-round. The activity lasts about 90 minutes and includes a ride on the ski lift and a walk along the trails, both of which are magically lit up.

Pro tips: evenings on the mountain can be rather cool, so be sure to bring warm, comfortable clothing and an outer layer designed for wind and rain. Closed-toe footwear is also a must, since part of the journey involves hiking along a somewhat inclined trail between rides on the ski lift.

Summer only

Stella Nivis

Stella Nivis is a journey back in time to explore the history, culture, and heritage of Québec City. The new immersive experience is set to last between 45 minutes and 1 hour and will be presented in Limoilou’s Saint-Fidèle Church. Stella Nivis uses sound and light to tell the story of Jacques Cartier, particularly his experiences with First Nations and the creation of New France.

Scheduled to open in the spring of 2024; will run year-round
