Umbrella Alley (Rue du Cul-de-Sac)
Point of interest
Famous for its colourful umbrellas suspended overhead during the summer months, Rue du Cul-de-Sac offers an iconic setting that attracts countless photographers and visitors.
This charming alley, connecting Rue Notre-Dame and Boulevard Champlain, is located in the heart of Petit-Champlain, recognized as the oldest commercial district in North America. A stroll down Rue du Cul-de-Sac fits perfectly into a visit of Petit-Champlain and Place Royale, two of Old Québec’s must-see attractions.
The umbrellas are typically installed from June through October. In January and February, they are replaced by suspended hockey sticks in honor of the Québec City International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.
It’s hard to resist pulling out your camera on this picturesque street. Looking up, you’ll catch a stunning view of Château Frontenac overlooking the cliff, creating one of Québec City’s most picturesque heritage scenes.
The most popular photo spot is located at the corner of Rue du Cul-de-Sac and Notre-Dame Street. From here, you can capture the colorful umbrellas, the charming architecture of Petit-Champlain, and Château Frontenac all in a single shot.
Best Time to Visit the Umbrella Alley
To experience the alley at its most beautiful, plan your visit early in the morning, when the area is still peaceful before the crowds arrive.
Blue hour, just after sunset, is another excellent time to wander through the street and capture unforgettable photos.
Why Are There Umbrellas Hanging Above the Street?
Why are colorful umbrellas suspended above Rue du Cul-de-Sac? The installation was inspired by a growing trend in urban design that transforms everyday objects into eye-catching overhead art displays. The project was created by the Coopérative du Quartier Petit Champlain as a way to breathe new life into a street that had long been overlooked.
Parking and Access
Because the area is especially busy during the summer, it’s best to park outside Old Québec and continue on foot. Old Québec is easy to explore by walking, and the neighborhood is also well served by public transit.
