Messe solennelle pour une pleine lune d’été

Festival d'opéra de Québec

The Raoul-Jobin Hall at Palais Montcalm, with its majestic organ Casavant, is the ideal setting for Christian Thomas’ opera, adapted from Michel Tremblay’s work, Messe solennelle pour une pleine lune d’été (Solemn Mass for a Full Moon in Summer). It features the five figures of the couple and the widow (Lyne Fortin) of the play, who will be able to rely on cinematographic music to express their pain in a ceremony to life, a prayer to love. A Quebec-style cast directed by Alain Zouvi in a setting created by Jean Bard.

Messe solennelle… is one of Michel Tremblay’s most unknown pieces. Yet the fate of those figures who speak from their balconies to the hot August moon rightly addresses love and disaffection. The full moon becomes a revelation of the deep thoughts, of the things that we keep silent, of the lucidity of suffering. The action that takes place during this full moon evening takes the form of a mass where the sacred and the profane mix, between mass and exorcism. Will the characters be able to break themselves free and to calm down after this dramatic liturgy?
