MNBAQ, Jean-Guy Kérouac
The title Latent Energies refers to the multiple polarities that haunt a selection of works in black and white. Black and white is at once snow and rock, normative and racialized bodies, photographic light and shadow, the clarity and gloom of thoughts, and periods of historic light and darkness, all of which reflect the complexity of human nature. The exhibition compares the works of Paul‑Émile Borduas, a mainstay of Québec art, with several recent acquisitions in the MNBAQ’s collection to develop new perspectives on a more inclusive history linking the works and Borduas’ thinking to contemporary reflections on creation, commitment, and diversity, between historicism and presentism.
