La nuit de la percussion
Orchestre symphonique de Québec
“Percussion Galore!” Clemens Schuldt describes the vibe of this concert as “funky,” and invites everyone to come dressed in jeans! The evening kicks off with the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Bernstein’s immortal musical inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In Manhattan, the Jets and the Sharks clash, disrupting the love between Tony and Maria to the rhythms of mambo, cha-cha, and rumble.
The swing of New York City continues with American composer and percussionist Andy Akiho’s remarkable Percussion Concerto. This piece dazzles with its grooves, emotional depth, and vibrant colors, masterfully performed by Scottish percussionist Colin Currie. The solo instruments—including a toy piano—are as surprising as they are inventive.
The evening concludes with Ravel’s legendary Boléro, where the unyielding rhythm of the snare drum—held steady over 340 measures—forms the backdrop for two melodic themes that repeat in an epic crescendo, culminating in a triumphant celebration of dance.
Join Clemens Schuldt and Colin Currie for this unforgettable concert—and stay for a surprise after-show treat!
