Carmen

Festival d'Opéra de Québec

In this year marking the 150th anniversary of Bizet's ultimate masterpiece—still today the most popular opera in the entire repertoire—the Festival d'opéra de Québec invites you to dive into the passionate world of this opéra-comique. From the very first notes, you'll be transported into the warmth of Spain, following the tragic destiny of a proud woman defying social conventions, ready to do anything for her freedom.

Everything will be done to ensure this production is an unmissable event, featuring an exceptional cast led by the great Stéphanie d'Oustrac in the title role, alongside fabulous emerging artists skillfully conducted by Quebec maestro Jacques Lacombe. Opera enthusiasts will particularly relish the rare opportunity to experience the original version with spoken dialogues.

Carmen embodies the fiery spirit of seduction and independence. Don José, obsessed by the beautiful gypsy, abandons everything to follow his passion. Carmen soon tires of his love, preferring instead the torero Escamillo. From the sunny square echoing with the chorus of the cigar makers, to the golden splendor of the arena where the fateful conclusion unfolds, Carmen enchants and captivates.
